The Third Option

While Medellín and Bogotá dominate Colombia's medical tourism conversation, Cartagena offers something neither can match: the Caribbean. For patients whose procedures allow for a beach-adjacent recovery — and who want to combine treatment with genuine vacation — Cartagena is an increasingly compelling option.

This isn't the right city for every procedure. But for the right patients and the right treatments, Cartagena offers a uniquely appealing combination of medical care and tropical recovery.

Colombia's Caribbean gem — UNESCO World Heritage walled city, growing medical tourism infrastructure, and beach recovery for lighter procedures

Medical Infrastructure

Cartagena's medical infrastructure is less developed than Medellín's or Bogotá's but is growing rapidly. The city has several well-equipped private clinics and hospitals, including facilities with ICONTEC accreditation. Major dental clinics serving international patients are established, and cosmetic surgery practices with SCCP-certified surgeons operate in the city's upscale Bocagrande neighborhood.

Cartagena does not currently have a JCI-accredited hospital. For procedures that benefit from JCI-level infrastructure (complex surgeries, major orthopedic work, transplant evaluation), Medellín or Bogotá remain the better choices. Cartagena's strength lies in procedures where the clinical requirements are less intensive and the recovery environment matters more.

Best Procedures for Cartagena

Ideal Cartagena Procedures

Dental work: Veneers, implants, crowns, smile design, full-mouth restorations. Dental procedures require minimal recovery downtime, making a beach vacation the perfect complement. Cartagena has several international-standard dental clinics with English-speaking staff.

Cosmetic procedures (lighter): Rhinoplasty, facelifts, eyelid surgery, Botox and filler treatments. Procedures where recovery allows for gentle activity within days.

LASIK and vision correction: Same-day recovery allows immediate enjoyment of the city.

Dermatological procedures: Laser treatments, mole removal, skin resurfacing.

Less Ideal for Cartagena

Major body cosmetic surgery (BBL, tummy tuck, breast augmentation) is better suited to Medellín, where the recovery house ecosystem, lymphatic drainage specialist network, and moderate climate provide a more supportive post-surgical environment. Cartagena's heat (28–32°C / 82–90°F) can increase swelling and discomfort for body surgery patients. Complex or multi-specialty procedures should be done at JCI-accredited facilities in Medellín, Bogotá, or Cali.

The City Itself

Cartagena's walled old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a photogenic maze of colonial architecture, plazas, churches, and cobblestone streets. Bocagrande is the modern beachfront neighborhood with high-rise hotels, restaurants, and nightlife. The Rosario Islands, a 45-minute boat ride from the city, offer pristine Caribbean beaches and snorkeling.

For patients recovering from dental work or minor procedures, Cartagena offers a genuinely vacation-like recovery experience. Walking the old city, dining at world-class restaurants (Cartagena's food scene is outstanding), taking boat trips, and relaxing on the beach — all while your new veneers set or your rhinoplasty swelling subsides.

Getting to Cartagena

Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG) receives direct flights from Miami (3 hours), Fort Lauderdale, New York (JFK), and several other US cities via JetBlue, Spirit, and Avianca. Round-trip fares typically range from $300 to $600. The flight from Bogotá is approximately 1.5 hours if connecting domestically.

Climate Considerations

Cartagena is tropical Caribbean — hot and humid year-round, with temperatures averaging 28–32°C (82–90°F). This is important for procedure selection. The heat and humidity are fine for dental recovery, LASIK recovery, and minor cosmetic procedures. They're less ideal for body surgery recovery where compression garments, swelling management, and wound healing are critical. Air-conditioned hotels and clinics mitigate the heat, but outdoor activity in the immediate post-operative period may be uncomfortable for body surgery patients.

The Cartagena Play

Fly in, get your dental work or minor procedure done, and recover on the Caribbean coast with ceviche, colonial architecture, and ocean breezes. Cartagena won't replace Medellín for major surgical procedures, but for the right combination of treatment and vacation, it's hard to beat. Time your trip outside peak hurricane season (typically the dry season, December through April) for the best weather.
